Explaining AKC Agility Titles
by Carolyn Peterson
There are four different organizations I know of running agility
trials in the US and offering titles (AKC, UKC, USDAA and NADAC).
AKC is what has been mentioned recently and seems to be the
best known of the four, so this refers to AKC titles.
A leg is earned with a qualifying score at the level. The levels
are:
Novice
3 legs needed
for a novice title
Open
3 legs needed
for an open title
Excellent
3 legs needed
for the excellent title
Then 10 additional legs for a masters title
AKC has standard agility with titles being NA, OA, AX, MX
and jumpers with weaves with the titles being NAJ, OAJ, AXJ and
MXJ. One can be in different levels for standard and jumpers.
This year, the agility champion title (MACH) was added.
Twenty double Qs (perfect runs in standard and jumpers
on the same day/trial) and 750 points are needed for this.
Points are earned by being under course time. I believe only
two
dogs in the country have earned this so far -- a sheltie and a
keeshond.
Each level is divided by height into dogs jumping 8", 12", 16",
20" & 24". Most Cavaliers are in the 12" jump height which is for
dogs 14" and less at the withers.
We don't need to win at one level to advance to the next, just
qualify the appropriate number of times.
